Wolverhampton Wanderers FC striker, Tolu Arokodare has opened up about missing out on Nigeria’s final squad for the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, admitting he wasn’t surprised by the decision.

The Super Eagles forward had been included in the provisional list but failed to make the cut for the tournament, where Nigeria ultimately claimed third place after defeating Egypt 4–2 on penalties in the bronze medal match.

In an interview with Counter Attack, Arokodare reflected on his mindset leading up to the announcement, acknowledging that his omission felt realistic given recent performances.

“To be very honest, I knew not anybody telling me. Since that Congo game because I would be very honest,” he said, referring to Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying playoff against DR Congo.

Arokodare explained that his limited impact in that crucial match, combined with a challenging club season at Wolves, left him prepared for the setback:

“The way my last game went with the national team wasn’t really the best and the way the season was going with Wolves. I wasn’t playing as many minutes. I am like, Tolu be realistic, if you’re the coach, would you call yourself?”

Despite the disappointment, the 25-year-old striker showed maturity and self-awareness, recognizing the importance of form and opportunity in national team selection. His reflections suggest a determined mindset as he looks to regain momentum at Wolves and push for future call-ups to the Super Eagles squad

Arokodare’s honesty offers insight into the mental resilience required by players navigating both club challenges and international expectations.
