Nigeria forward David Okereke joins Benevento on free transfer

Nigerian striker David Chidozie Okereke has completed a move to newly promoted Serie B side Benevento, joining the Italian club on a free transfer following his departure from Cremonese.

The forward has committed his future to Benevento until June 30, 2028 and is expected to play a huge role for the club.

The agreement also includes an option for an automatic one-year extension, meaning Okereke could potentially remain with Benevento until June 2029, depending on the conditions of the contract.

The move represents another chapter in Okereke’s career in Italian football, where the Nigerian striker has spent several years competing at both Serie A and Serie B level.

Okereke became a sought-after player during the current transfer window after becoming available on a free transfer. Several clubs reportedly expressed an interest in securing his services, but the 29-year-old ultimately opted to remain in Italy and continue his career with Benevento.

Among the clubs linked with the Nigerian forward were Major League Soccer side FC Cincinnati, as well as Turkish Super Lig outfits Samsunspor and Gaziantep FK.

Despite interest from abroad, Okereke chose Benevento as his next destination, giving him the opportunity to remain in a league and country he knows well.

Benevento’s return to Serie B provides Okereke with a fresh challenge as the club prepares for life in Italy’s second tier. His experience, pace and ability to operate in attacking positions could make him an important addition to the squad.

For Okereke, the move also provides an opportunity to revive his career and establish himself as a key figure in Benevento’s attacking setup.

The Nigerian forward will now turn his attention to pre-season preparations as he looks to adapt quickly to his new surroundings and help Benevento compete successfully in Serie B.
