The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has made the decision to relieve Finidi George of his duties as head coach of the national team following a string of disappointing results by the Super Eagles in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying series
After a crisis meeting on Thursday, the NFF has announced plans to hire a foreign technical adviser in the coming weeks prior to the AFCON 2025 qualifiers and remaining World Cup matches.
This suggests that Finidi’s time as coach has come to an end, having only led the team in just two competitive matches and two friendly matches as a caretaker.
Furthermore, the NFF has also decided to strengthen their Technical Department by bringing in more experienced individuals.
Additionally, the Technical and Development Sub-Committee will be restructured immediately.
The Super Eagles are yet to record a single win in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifications, having managed only three points after four rounds of matches.
Finidi was handed the head coach role on an interim basis following the departure of Jose Peseiro, whose contract expired after guiding Nigeria to second place in the AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire.
