Nigeria football authorities ban and fine Kwara United over crowd disturbance

Nigerian football authorities has handed down heavy sanctions to Kwara United following crowd disturbances at their rescheduled Matchday 22 clash against Rivers United in Ilorin.

The Nigerian top-flight was thrown into shock after supporters of Kwara United invaded the pitch in the high-stake clash against Rivers United, a match that ended in a 1-1 draw.

After reviewing videos and match reports, the Nigerian football authorities has decided to inflict ban and fine on Kwara United.

The league fined Kwara United ₦9 million, docked three points, and deducted three goals from their total tally as punishment for breaching Premier League regulations.

The disciplinary committee cited the club’s failure to provide adequate security, which allowed unauthorized individuals into restricted areas, and its inability to control supporters whose actions reportedly resulted in the harassment and injury of match officials and Rivers United personnel.

As part of the sanctions, Kwara United will also be required to play their remaining home fixtures at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, away from their usual Ilorin base.

Meanwhile, Kwara United has been given 48 hours to lodge an appeal against the Nigerian Premier Football League’s decision.

The ruling sends a strong message on crowd management and the responsibilities of clubs to ensure the safety of players, officials, and spectators in Nigeria’s top-flight football.
