Nigeria football authorities ban and fine Katsina United following attack on Ghanaian player Nana Abraham

Katsina United have been fined ₦9m and ordered to play all their remaining home matches behind closed doors at a neutral venue by the Nigerian football authorities following attack on Ghanaian midfielder Nana Kwame Abraham during a league match against FC Barau. 

The Nigerian top-flight was thrown into shock on Saturday following a gruesome incident, where Ghanaian midfielder Nana Kwame Abraham, nearly lost his life.

The midfielder, who is in the books of FC Barau was brutally attacked by unruly Katsina United fans after the visitors’ equalizer in the highly-tensed clash on Saturday

The chaotic scenes unfolded at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium when Barau FC levelled the score 1-1 through Orji Kalu in the 69th minute.

Reports emanating from Nigeria suggest that the Ghanaian midfielder was caught and had his throat slit in a horrifying act of violence that sent shockwaves across the football community.

The match was briefly stopped before continuing, with Abraham replaced by Hillary Ekawu following a deep cut on his neck.

However, the Nigerian Premier Football League has cracked the whip, slapping Katsina United with $6,267 fine and an indefinite stadium ban.

Katsina United will play all their remaining home matches behind closed doors at a neutral venue.

As the Nigeria Premier Football League, the home team breached several sections of rules governing the top-flight, failing to provide adequate security and allowing unauthorized persons access to restricted areas.

The league also condemned the club for failing to control its supporters, who reportedly harassed Barau FC players and officials and threw harmful objects onto the pitch.

Meanwhile, Katsina United have 48 hours from the date of the notice to appeal the sanctions.
