Nigeria Beats Ghana in Uyo Stadium Inauguration Match
UYO, Nigeria – Nigeria celebrated the inauguration of the Akwa Ibom International Stadium in style on Friday with a 1-0 victory over Ghana’s U23 side in a friendly match played under the watchful eye of President Goodluck Jonathan.
Coached by Daniel Amokachi, the local Super Eagles showed greater maturity and control throughout the match. Although they missed several early chances, it was Emem Eduok, the current top scorer in the Nigerian league, who broke the deadlock. His well-placed header in the first half beat Ghanaian goalkeeper Richard Ofori, putting Nigeria ahead 1-0 before the break.
In the second half, Nigeria maintained their dominance in possession and created more chances but lacked the finishing touch to extend the lead. Ghana struggled to get back into the game and saw their hopes further dented when Richard Yamoah was sent off, reducing the Black Satellites to 10 men.
The match not only delivered a morale-boosting win for the Super Eagles but also served as a successful test for the new 30,000-capacity stadium in Uyo, which is now ready to host major fixtures, including upcoming qualifiers.
A symbolic night for Nigerian football—a new stadium, a new victory, and a bright step forward.
