Nigeria beat Burkina Faso to finish third at WAFU B U17 tournament

Nigeria clinched third place at the WAFU B U17 Tournament with a 2-0 win over Burkina Faso in the classification match on Friday.

Both teams entered the encounter aiming to end their campaign on a positive note after falling short in the semi-finals.

Nigeria showed more efficiency in front of goal and controlled key moments to claim a deserved victory.

The opening half ended goalless despite several promising chances. Nigeria pressed with pace and intensity, while Burkina Faso struggled to convert possession into clear opportunities.

The match turned in the 50th minute when Ahmed Yusuf calmly finished to break the deadlock and hand Nigeria the lead.

Burkina Faso pushed forward to equalise but found little success against a disciplined Nigerian defence. Their forward momentum left gaps at the back, and Nigeria exploited them effectively.

In the 77th minute, Famous Umole doubled the advantage, sealing the result and confirming Nigeria’s third-place finish.

The win offered a positive conclusion for the Golden Eaglets, who responded strongly after their semi-final disappointment.

The performance highlighted their attacking quality and resilience, providing optimism for future competitions.

However, the result did not alter qualification for the upcoming U17 Africa Cup of Nations. Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana, who had already secured their places, will meet in the final later tonight at 19:00.

Nigeria’s victory served as a morale boost and a demonstration of their potential, while Burkina Faso gained valuable experience from a hard-fought tournament.
