Nigeria: Ademola Lookman dismisses January loan talk as Atalanta future remains under review
Ademola Lookman has firmly dismissed the prospect of leaving Atalanta on loan in January, despite growing speculation over interest from Turkish champions Galatasaray.
Reports from journalist Alessandro Giovanni Pagliarini indicate that the forward is not considering a temporary move, with the idea of a loan not to the liking of the Atalanta Bergamo striker.
Although Galatasaray have been monitoring his situation, no discussions have taken place between the clubs or the player’s representatives.
Lookman’s season has been marked by inconsistent involvement, with the Nigerian international featuring less frequently than in previous campaigns.
He has managed just one goal across 10 league appearances, a sharp contrast to last season’s influential performances.
However, his recent increase in minutes has contributed to his decision to remain in Italy through the winter.
Despite the ongoing rumours, Lookman is said to be focused on his upcoming national-team commitments.
He is preparing to join Nigeria for the Africa Cup of Nations, and any conversation about his long-term future is expected to take place only after the tournament.
His stance comes after comments from several former Nigerian internationals, including Nwankwo Kanu and Peter Odemwingie, who criticised Atalanta’s handling of his minutes this season.
Lookman, currently valued at €40 million by Transfermarkt, is under contract with Atalanta until 30 June 2027.
His annual salary stands at €2,310,000 (1,514,807,377 FCFA), reflecting his status as one of the club’s key assets even during a spell of reduced playing time.
Atalanta now turn their attention to their upcoming league fixture against Napoli, which marks matchday 12 of the Serie A season.
Betting companies have published their odds for the clash, offering 3.20 on an Atalanta victory, 3.20 for a draw, and 1.98 on a win for Napoli.
While speculation over Lookman’s future is unlikely to disappear, the forward has made his immediate intentions clear.
With no negotiations underway and a determination to fight for his role in Bergamo, Atalanta appear set to retain one of their most dynamic attacking talents — at least for the remainder of the current campaign.
