Niger: Rachid Ghaflaoui the Next Coach of the Mena?

Since Gernot Rohr’s departure, Niger’s national team, the Mena, remain without a head coach—a pressing issue with less than 45 days to go before the start of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) qualifiers. The Nigerien Football Federation (FENIFOOT) is currently reviewing over 30 applications, among which three African candidates stand out:

Top African Candidates for Niger Job

  1. François Zahoui (Ivory Coast)

    • Former coach of the Ivorian national team and known for his pragmatic approach.

    • Brings CAN experience, having led Côte d’Ivoire to the 2012 final.

  2. Daniel Amokachi (Nigeria)

    • Ex-Nigerian international and former assistant to Stephen Keshi with the Super Eagles.

    • Known for his charisma and motivational style.

  3. Rachid Ghaflaoui (Morocco)

    • Currently head coach of SC Sahel in Niger.

    • Local football knowledge: notably eliminated MC Alger in the CAF Cup—an impressive feat for a Niger-based club.

    • His proposal includes a broader technical role:

      • Head coach of the national A team

      • Manager of the CHAN local team (set to face Togo)

      • Role as technical director to help develop grassroots football and talent scouting

Niger’s Group for CAN 2017 Qualifiers (Group K):

  • 🇸🇳 Senegal

  • 🇧🇮 Burundi

  • 🇳🇦 Namibia

  • 🇳🇪 Niger

It’s a competitive group, and Niger urgently needs a clear coaching direction to stand a chance of qualifying.

 Time is Running Out

With preparations for the qualifiers looming, the lack of a confirmed coach risks undermining Niger’s campaign. Ghaflaoui’s versatility and local track record could give him an edge, especially if FENIFOOT is seeking continuity and long-term development beyond just the upcoming qualifiers.
