Nicolas Pépé is on the lookout for a fresh challenge following his departure from Trabzonspor. The Ivorian forward opened up about the turbulent phases of his career in an interview with French newspaper L’Équipe.
Reflecting on his journey a year after leaving Arsenal, Pépé, 29, shared, “People often think that I had all the cards in hand to succeed there, but that I didn’t manage it.
So, for them, it’s a failure. After my years at Lille, it is one, that’s for sure. But it’s crucial to be able to be self-critical without waiting for others to do it for you.
I especially feel a sense of revenge towards myself.”
The 2023 African champion highlighted how the substantial fee for his transfer to Arsenal adversely affected his time in the Premier League.
“I didn’t ask for €80 million to be paid for me. At that price, people don’t care where you come from, they just want you to perform immediately.
They only look at the statistics, it’s unfortunate but that’s the reality,” he remarked.
Pépé continued, “There aren’t many players who score 25 goals a season straight away, and I’m not even a number 9. I wasn’t going to dominate the Premier League straight away.
But that’s what led to a flood of criticism, bordering on harassment. I don’t look at social media much, but if my brother told me what was being said about me, subconsciously, it affected me.
It also came from the media or from certain members of the club. They don’t realise that it can affect the mentality, the family and have an impact on performance.
The only people who have always supported me are the Arsenal fans.”
The former Lille star confessed to experiencing a form of trauma at Arsenal, feeling as though his passion had been stripped from him.
Now, the Ivorian international is eager to embark on a new sporting venture.
“Trabzonspor was kind enough to only sign me for one year. I had the option to extend, but the idea is to find a new project.
Saudi Arabia? I’m not closed to anything, but I still want to show that I can achieve something. I’m not done with Europe and football.”
Pépé’s reflections reveal the intense pressure and scrutiny he faced following his high-profile move to Arsenal. The weight of expectations, amplified by the significant transfer fee, created an environment where immediate success was demanded.
His candid remarks shed light on the mental and emotional toll such pressures can exert on professional athletes.
Despite the challenges, Pépé remains resolute in his quest to prove his worth and find a platform where he can reignite his career.
His time at Arsenal, though marred by criticism and unfulfilled expectations, has only strengthened his resolve to succeed and demonstrate his capabilities.
As he searches for a new club, Pépé’s journey serves as a testament to the resilience required to navigate the highs and lows of professional football.
His story underscores the importance of self-belief and the need to find supportive environments that nurture, rather than stifle, a player’s growth and potential.
In summary, Nicolas Pépé is determined to turn the page on his challenging Arsenal chapter and pursue new opportunities where he can showcase his talent and passion for the game.
His reflections offer valuable insights into the pressures faced by top athletes and the enduring quest for redemption and fulfillment in their careers.
