Nicolas Jackson scores as Aston Villa stun Tottenham

Nicolas Jackson scored a superb goal as Aston Villa secured their first Premier League victory of the season with a 3-2 win over Tottenham on Saturday.

Villa produced a much stronger performance between two sides struggling at the beginning of the campaign and appeared to have the game under control before Tottenham mounted a late fightback.

The Senegal striker was one of the key figures for Unai Emery’s side, producing an impressive finish in the second half to put Villa 2-0 ahead.

Tottenham had chances to change the course of the match but found themselves behind in first-half stoppage time.

Zion Suzuki had already been forced into a series of saves before Tottenham’s defence was punished just before the break.

Andy Robertson lost possession, while Boubacar Kamara then missed an opportunity. The loose ball eventually fell for Johan Mamzambi, who made no mistake with the chance to give Villa the lead in the 45th minute plus three minutes.

Tottenham struggled to respond after the interval and had an equaliser ruled out for offside.

Their situation became even more difficult when Jackson produced a fine piece of individual skill to double Villa’s advantage in the 67th minute.

The goal carried extra significance for the visitors as it was the 7,000th goal scored by Villa in their history at the top level.

Villa did not stop there.

Buendia added a third in the 79th minute with a brilliant strike that appeared to put the result beyond Tottenham’s reach.

For much of the afternoon, Spurs had failed to find the back of the net and looked set to suffer a heavy defeat.

However, they finally ended their long wait for goals late in the game.

Gallagher pulled one back in the 86th minute before Van Hecke scored again in the seventh minute of added time.

The late goals gave Tottenham renewed hope and created a frantic finish at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

But the comeback came too late to prevent Villa from taking all three points.

The result ended Aston Villa’s wait for their first league win of the season and lifted Emery’s side out of the relegation zone.

For Tottenham, the defeat left the home crowd frustrated after their side had appeared to have little answer to Villa’s second-half dominance.

Villa’s victory was secured by three goals from Mamzambi, Jackson and Buendia, while Tottenham’s late response through Gallagher and Van Hecke was not enough to rescue a point.
