Zoopla, one of the club’s sponsors, has decided to terminate its partnership with the Baggies at the end of the season. Despite Anelka not displaying the sponsor’s logo on his jersey, Zoopla cited the player’s actions during the match against West Ham as the reason for ending the association.
In a statement, Zoopla explained, “The company has studied its positioning in recent weeks in light of the actions of player Nicolas Anelka during the match against West Ham. The company has decided to focus its marketing on other activities at the end of the season.”
Zoopla, co-owned by Jewish businessman Alex Chesterman, had previously issued a threat to withdraw its sponsorship.
Despite the controversy, West Bromwich Albion did not bench Anelka for the match, and he featured in the starting lineup. The club, however, released a press statement expressing concern over the potential harm caused by Anelka’s goal celebration and requested that he refrain from such actions. Anelka promptly agreed to comply with the club’s request.
After the match, the 34-year-old striker issued an apology for his gesture, maintaining that it was intended as an “anti-system” statement and denying any anti-Semitic or racist connotations.
