Anelka’s Atlético Mineiro Move Collapses Amid No-Show and Controversy
Nicolas Anelka’s proposed move to Atlético Mineiro has officially collapsed in dramatic fashion, after the French striker failed to travel to Brazil to finalise his contract — despite an agreement being in place and initial signs pointing to a done deal.
Anelka, who had recently parted ways with West Bromwich Albion following a controversial spell in the Premier League, was set to join the Brazilian club and link up with his former teammate and global icon Ronaldinho. His arrival was anticipated with enthusiasm, and even confirmed publicly by Atlético Mineiro president Alexandre Kalil on Twitter. The club had already added Anelka’s name to their official squad list online.
However, events took an unexpected turn when Anelka failed to board a flight to Brazil. With no direct contact from the player, Atlético Mineiro officials were left in the dark. As a result, the club’s sporting director, Eduardo Maluf, made the decision to cancel the transfer outright, citing a lack of professionalism.
“At no point were we able to speak with the player. We spoke only with a representative and his agent,” Maluf explained. “The greatness of Atlético Mineiro is much greater than Anelka. So we’re letting it go.”
Initially, Anelka’s camp explained the delay was due to a passport issue. This version was reportedly communicated both to Ronaldinho and to club officials. However, the situation took another twist when it was later revealed that Anelka was attending a Muslim gathering in Kuwait, further complicating matters.
“We agreed to postpone his presentation,” Maluf added. “But now they say he is in Kuwait and cannot come. The club is bigger than him. We’re cancelling.”
This incident adds yet another chapter to Anelka’s long and controversial career, which has seen him fall out with numerous clubs and managers despite his undeniable talent. For Atlético Mineiro, it is a case of what might have been — a chance to reunite two world-renowned stars that has now ended in disappointment and frustration.
