Nicolas Anelka Linked with Move to Standard Liège in Jupiler Pro League
Former French international Nicolas Anelka is reportedly drawing interest from Belgian side Standard Liège as he looks to revive his career, according to reports in the Belgian press.
Just months after a near move to Brazilian club Atlético Mineiro fell through, the 35-year-old striker—currently a free agent—is believed to be a key target for Standard Liège, who are seeking a replacement for Michy Batshuayi. The young Belgian forward recently left the club for Ligue 1 side Olympique de Marseille, leaving a significant gap in Standard’s attacking line-up.
According to Sud Presse, there is mutual interest between Anelka and Standard, the runners-up of last season’s Belgian Pro League. The club’s management is said to be preparing an ambitious approach to secure the veteran striker’s signature, with discussions reportedly set to take place in the near future.
Anelka’s extensive career has seen him feature for some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Juventus, and Fenerbahçe, as well as stints in China and Brazil. Should the move materialise, it would mark a notable chapter in the striker’s career, bringing his experience to the Jupiler Pro League.
Standard Liège face an important period ahead, with Champions League qualification on the line as they prepare to face Panathinaikos in the third preliminary round, scheduled for July 29 and August 5. The addition of an experienced forward like Anelka could provide a valuable boost for the club’s European ambitions.
With both parties reportedly eager to progress talks, a meeting between Standard officials and Anelka is expected soon to discuss the terms and potential transfer.
