Nico Gonzalez set for Newcastle medical ahead of £50m move from Manchester City

Nico Gonzalez is travelling to Newcastle on Tuesday to undergo a medical before completing a proposed move from Manchester City to Newcastle United during the current summer transfer window.

Sky Sports reports that the Spain midfielder is making the journey to the north-east of England to finalise the transfer. Newcastle United are expected to sign Gonzalez for £50m.

The medical is the next step in a move that would bring an end to Gonzalez’s time at Manchester City after his arrival from Porto in January 2025. The 23-year-old joined the Portuguese club permanently in the summer of 2023 and spent one-and-a-half seasons there before moving to the Premier League.

Gonzalez began his football career in Barcelona’s youth system. He later moved to Valencia on loan before establishing himself at Porto on a permanent basis.

Since joining Manchester City, Gonzalez has made 59 appearances for the club and scored four goals. He has been involved at the start of the new campaign, although his opportunities so far have come from the substitutes’ bench.

He was introduced for the final 11 minutes of Manchester City’s Community Shield match against Arsenal. Gonzalez was then an unused substitute when City faced Bournemouth in their opening league fixture.

Manchester City won that match 2-1 against Bournemouth. Newcastle United began their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Liverpool.

Gonzalez’s proposed transfer would therefore see him move to Newcastle while the summer window remains open, with the club agreeing a fee of £50m for the midfielder, according to Sky Sports. His medical in Newcastle is intended to allow the final details of the move to be completed.
