Nico Gonzalez ready for Newcastle project after breakthrough with Manchester City

Newcastle United have reached a verbal agreement with Manchester City to sign Spanish midfielder Nico Gonzalez in a deal worth up to £50m, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The agreement includes an initial £47m transfer fee, with a further £3m available through add-ons and performance-related bonuses. Newcastle have also received the player’s approval to proceed with the move after negotiations made significant progress in recent hours.

Gonzalez is now ready to begin a new chapter with the English club, where he is expected to become an important part of Newcastle United’s plans. The proposed transfer would bring Gonzalez’s time at Manchester City to an end only a short period after he joined the club. The midfielder moved to City from Porto in January 2025, but he was unable to establish himself as a regular member of the starting line-up.

His lack of a settled place in Pep Guardiola’s team left his future at the Etihad Stadium uncertain, with Manchester City now preparing to part with him as they continue to reshape their squad.

For Newcastle, the move represents a significant investment in a midfielder they believe can play a central role in the next stage of the club’s development.
