Jordan Amavi has clarified his nationality, dispelling rumors suggesting he has Togolese origins. In an interview with Francefootball, the Nice left-back emphasized that he is purely French and not Franco-Togolese as some media outlets have claimed.
Amavi expressed amusement at the misinformation, stating, “I am not Togolese at all! There are media there that talk about me, even Serge Gakpé asked me if I had Togolese origins… I inquired, that’s not the case! It makes me laugh. Every time my friends read an article presenting me as Franco-Togolese, they send me a message with the screenshot (laughs).”
Born in Toulon, France, Amavi has spent his entire life in the country and considers Toulon his home. Despite his name having a Togolese sound, he has no Togolese roots and has no interest in exploring the origins of his grandparents.
Having signed his professional contract with Nice, Amavi has also earned a call-up to the French under-20 team, which he considers a significant achievement. He stated, “Wearing the France team jersey is a reward. Being able to do it at home is even better… It’s a treat.”
