Newcastle United tracking Algeria defender Rafik Belghali after World Cup breakthrough

Rafik Belghali has emerged as a transfer target for Newcastle United after raising his profile during the 2026 World Cup with Algeria.

The Hellas Verona right-back is being closely monitored by the Premier League club, according to TuttoMercatoWeb, with Newcastle potentially considering a move in the coming days.

Newcastle United have already spent about €161m during the summer transfer window, making them the fifth-biggest spenders in the Premier League behind Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester City. A further approach for Belghali has not been ruled out.

Hellas Verona, who have since been relegated to Serie B, are understood to be seeking between €12m and €15m for the defender. Belghali remains under contract with the Italian club until 2029, giving Verona a strong negotiating position.

The 24-year-old was already attracting interest from several clubs before the World Cup, but his performances in Algeria’s campaign significantly increased his value.

Although the Fennecs endured a generally disappointing tournament and were knocked out by Switzerland in the round of 32, Belghali was one of the few players to come away with his reputation enhanced.

Algeria manager Vladimir Petkovic selected him as the team’s first-choice right-back, and Belghali made a notable impression against Austria by providing an assist. He also stood out during Algeria’s eventual elimination.

His energy, repeated attacking runs and ability to contribute in the final third have helped attract attention from clubs in both England and Italy.

Newcastle United are not the first major club to show an interest in the defender. Inter Milan are reportedly following him as they look to strengthen their right flank after Denzel Dumfries left for Real Madrid.

Roma had also opened discussions over a possible deal before the World Cup.

Belghali’s market value has risen sharply since the tournament. Transfermarkt valued him at about €7m before the competition, but his current estimated worth is €12m.

His rise comes at a significant moment for Algeria, with Riyad Mahrez and Aissa Mandi having recently ended their international careers. Belghali could now become one of the leading figures in the national team’s next cycle.

After establishing himself with the Fennecs, the defender’s next major step could come in the Premier League, with Newcastle United currently monitoring his situation at Hellas Verona.
