Newcastle United step up pursuit of Johan Manzambi

Newcastle United are ramping up their efforts to sign Johan Manzambi from SC Freiburg after his eye-catching World Cup displays for Switzerland.

According to Sky, the Premier League side are already in direct contact with Freiburg and are pushing hard to bring in the 20-year-old midfielder, whose performances have drawn interest from several top European clubs.

Freiburg, however, are in a strong position. Manzambi is under contract until 2030, giving the Bundesliga club plenty of leverage in negotiations. Reports suggest they are now thinking in terms of a fee that could reach up to €60 million, reflecting both his long deal and his rapid rise.

At the World Cup, Manzambi has underlined his reputation as one of Europe’s most sought-after young midfielders. He has produced three goals and two assists in four games, although a recent knee injury picked up in training means he will miss Switzerland’s clash with Colombia. Despite that setback, his overall impact has firmly put him on the radar of elite clubs.

Newcastle appear to be the most proactive suitor at the moment. The Magpies recently spent around €50 million to sign Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim, and moving for Manzambi would further underline their willingness to invest heavily in Bundesliga talent.
