Newcastle United have identified Yoane Wissa as their primary attacking target as the summer transfer window enters its final stages, with negotiations over a move for the Brentford striker reportedly at an advanced stage.

The 27-year-old Congolese international enjoyed a prolific Premier League campaign last season, scoring 19 goals and reinforcing his reputation as one of the division’s most clinical forwards.

With just a year remaining on his contract at Brentford, Wissa’s future has become the subject of intense speculation, and Newcastle are now prepared to test the London club’s resolve with a formal bid.

According to The Guardian, talks between the two clubs are progressing well, raising the possibility of a swift agreement.

The Magpies’ renewed attacking ambition has been bolstered by the recent sale of Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United, a deal which has freed up substantial funds for reinvestment.

Newcastle’s interest in Wissa comes as part of a broader reshaping of their forward line.

While the Brentford man remains the top priority, the club is also keeping close tabs on FC Porto’s rising Nigerian star, Samu Aghehowa.

The 21-year-old striker has taken the Portuguese Liga by storm, scoring 19 goals in 30 appearances last season and earning a valuation of around €100 million.

However, any move for Aghehowa would depend on the likely departure of Luuk de Jong, whose playing style is viewed as less compatible with Newcastle’s long-term attacking blueprint.

Club sources suggest that while the Nigerian remains a target of interest, Wissa’s proven Premier League record and immediate availability make him the more pressing acquisition.

Wissa’s pace, direct running, and eye for goal have made him a consistent threat since his arrival in England, and Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is believed to view the forward as an ideal fit for his high-intensity, attack-minded system.

His ability to operate both as a central striker and from wide positions would offer the Magpies valuable tactical flexibility.

If the deal is completed in time, Wissa could make his debut at St James’ Park within weeks, with fans hopeful his arrival will inject the cutting edge needed to push Newcastle further up the Premier League table.

For now, all eyes remain on the outcome of the negotiations — and whether the DR Congo international will be wearing black and white before the window closes.
