Newcastle United forced to delay Congolese international Yoane Wissa’s debut

Yoane Wissa will not make his Newcastle United debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, with manager Eddie Howe confirming the forward remains sidelined through injury.

The Congolese international, signed from Brentford on the final day of the transfer window, had been expected to feature at Molineux but continues to recover from a knock sustained while on duty with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Unfortunately, he won’t be playing in this game, Howe told reporters. I saw him for the first time yesterday and he’s still feeling the effects of the injury he picked up just before he came off in his international match. We’ll have to see how he progresses.

Wissa had represented DR Congo in both of their recent World Cup qualifiers against South Sudan and Senegal, only to be substituted in the 74th minute against the Lions of Teranga after picking up the problem.

His fitness concerns have now delayed what Newcastle fans had hoped would be a swift introduction to their new attacking signing.

The 27-year-old enjoyed a productive spell at Brentford, where his direct running and eye for goal made him a consistent threat in the Premier League.

Supporters on Tyneside were eager to see him bring those qualities to Howe’s side, but his competitive bow will now have to wait.

Alongside the update on Wissa, Howe provided further insight into the condition of his squad.

He praised the seamless adaptation of summer arrival Nick Woltemade, describing the forward as already ready and well-adjusted to the demands of the team.

There was less positive news regarding midfielder Jacob Ramsey, who will be unavailable until after the international break.

The former Aston Villa man sustained an ankle injury in the recent fixture against Leeds United, and his absence is considered a significant setback for Newcastle’s midfield options.

One bright note for Howe was the return of Joelinton, who has rejoined full training and is once again available for selection.

The Brazilian, a cornerstone of Newcastle’s midfield under Howe, is seen as a vital figure in both defensive solidity and attacking transitions. He’s a key player for us, Howe emphasised, welcoming his return as a timely boost.

While Newcastle must wait to see Wissa in black and white, the focus now turns to maximising their available options for the clash with Wolves.

Howe’s side will hope Joelinton’s comeback and Woltemade’s readiness can help compensate for the absence of their eagerly anticipated new signing.
