Mehdi Abeid Leaves Newcastle for Panathinaikos Return
It’s official: Mehdi Abeid has completed a move from Newcastle United to Panathinaikos, marking the end of a four-year spell in English football for the Algerian midfielder.
The 23-year-old, who previously spent the 2013–2014 season on loan at the Greek club, has now joined Panathinaikos on a permanent deal. Although the transfer fee remains undisclosed, both clubs have confirmed the transaction.
Abeid, who signed for Newcastle in 2011 from French side RC Lens, struggled to cement a regular spot in the Magpies’ first team. Despite flashes of potential, he made only 21 senior appearances during his time at St James’ Park.
His most notable stint came during his loan spell in Greece, where he impressed with consistent performances and earned a growing reputation in the Greek Super League. That experience clearly left a lasting impression, as Panathinaikos have now opted to bring him back into the fold on a full-time basis.
The move offers Abeid a fresh opportunity to revive his career and gain more regular playing time, while Panathinaikos will hope his familiarity with the club and league can yield immediate results.
