Newcastle lead chase for Senegal midfielder Lamine Camara
Newcastle United are emerging as strong contenders in the race to sign highly rated Senegal midfielder Lamine Camara ahead of the summer window.
The 22-year-old has enjoyed a rapid rise since joining Monaco in 2024, establishing himself as one of the most promising young midfielders in European football. His energetic displays in Ligue 1, combined with impressive composure on the international stage with Senegal, have placed him firmly on the radar of several elite clubs.
Camara, who is contracted to Monaco until 2029 and valued at around €45 million (£39m, $53m), has already accumulated over 50 senior international caps despite his relatively young age. His versatility to operate both as a defensive midfielder and a more advanced No.8 has further increased his appeal.
A growing list of Premier League giants are monitoring the situation closely. Liverpool have tracked the player extensively, while Manchester United and Arsenal have both maintained long-term interest in his development. Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton, Brentford, and West Ham have also been credited with scouting the midfielder during the current campaign.
However, it is Newcastle United who are now believed to be showing the strongest intent. Club scouts have reportedly made repeated trips to France throughout 2026 to assess Camara’s performances, including a recent match at the Stade Louis II where he completed 90 minutes in Monaco’s 1–0 defeat to Lille.
Eddie Howe’s side are actively targeting midfield reinforcements ahead of a demanding season, with internal discussions focusing on adding athleticism, technical quality, and long-term value to the squad. Camara is understood to fit that profile perfectly.
Club sources insist Newcastle’s interest is not directly tied to uncertainty around Sandro Tonali’s future, although external speculation over the Italian midfielder has not entirely gone away. Officially, Newcastle continue to regard Tonali as a key part of their long-term project.
Recruitment staff at St James’ Park are said to be convinced that Camara possesses the physicality and tactical intelligence required to adapt quickly to the intensity of the Premier League. His ball progression, defensive work rate, and ability to operate under pressure have been highlighted as standout traits.
A well-placed source has described the midfielder as a player of “increasing interest” across Europe, adding that there is a strong expectation within football circles that Camara could make the move to England if a suitable offer arrives this summer.
Monaco, meanwhile, are aware of the growing attention surrounding one of their most valuable young assets. While the French club are not actively seeking a sale, they may face mounting pressure if bidding intensifies among Europe’s elite.
For Newcastle, the competition will be fierce. With Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United, and several other Premier League clubs in the mix, securing Camara’s signature will require both financial strength and sporting ambition.
As the summer transfer window approaches, Lamine Camara is fast becoming one of the most sought-after midfielders in Europe—and Newcastle United appear determined not to be left behind in the race.
