Newcastle agree €35m deal for Benfica right-back Amar Dedic

Newcastle United have reached an agreement with Benfica to sign right-back Amar Dedic for €35m, according to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano.

Benfica will retain a clause entitling them to a percentage of any future sale of the Bosnia and Herzegovina international.

The Portuguese club had wanted Dedic to remain, but the player made a move to Newcastle his top priority. He is also said to be enthusiastic about working with new manager Matias Jaissle.

Dedic joined Benfica in the summer of 2025 from Austrian club Salzburg. He won the 2026 Portuguese Super Cup with Benfica.

Newcastle are preparing for the new season under Jaissle, who took charge a few days ago after replacing Eddie Howe. The German coach faces the task of rebuilding a squad that has seen several prominent departures.

Anthony Gordon has moved to Barcelona, Bruno Guimaraes has joined Arsenal, and Sandro Tonali has left for Tottenham.

Newcastle have played five pre-season matches ahead of the new campaign. They began with a 3-0 victory over Darlington before drawing 1-1 with Gateshead.

They then suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat by Bristol City, but responded with a significant 2-1 win against Valencia in Jaissle’s first match in charge. Their most recent fixture ended in a 3-1 loss to Everton.

Newcastle are due to play their final friendly of the preparations against Bayer Leverkusen at 17:00 on Saturday.

The club finished last season 12th in the league with 49 points. Their first match of the new campaign will be against Liverpool at St James’ Park next Sunday.
