The global community is mourning the passing of Nelson Mandela, the iconic figure of the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa. Mandela, who spent 27 years in prison, became a symbol of reconciliation and unity in the post-apartheid era. His death at the age of 95 has resonated deeply across the world, and sports figures are among those expressing their grief and paying tribute to the former South African president.

Sepp Blatter, the president of FIFA, expressed deep sorrow at Mandela’s passing, recalling their meeting in 2005 when Mandela received the World Cup trophy for organizing the first major football event on the African continent. Various athletes and sports organizations, including Jérôme Valcke, the Oceania Football Confederation, Johan Djourou, Gael Monfils, Serge Ibaka, Pelé, Yaya Touré, Boris Becker, and Baf Gomis, have shared their condolences and acknowledged Mandela’s influence and inspiration.

The world acknowledges Mandela not only for his political achievements but also for his role as a unifying figure and a symbol of resilience and courage. Mandela’s legacy extends beyond politics, leaving an indelible mark on the sports world and humanity as a whole.
