Granada head coach José Rojo Martín, widely known as Pacheta, has delivered a measured assessment of Luca Zidane, insisting the Algeria international is “neither Neuer nor Buffon” despite his growing reputation.
The comment, which blends admiration with restraint, underlines the coach’s desire to keep expectations in check as interest around the goalkeeper continues to build.
Zidane, 27, has seen his profile rise sharply over the past year. His decision to represent Algeria has added momentum to his career, culminating in a strong showing at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where he reached the quarter-finals before elimination by Nigeria.
Those performances have propelled him into the spotlight across Africa and Europe and turned him into a sought-after name in the transfer market.
A modern goalkeeper valued beyond shot-stopping
Pacheta has been clear about why Zidane matters to Granada. He praised the goalkeeper’s technical ability, particularly his comfort with the ball at his feet, a defining requirement for modern keepers.
The coach highlighted Zidane’s passing range and composure in build-up play, noting that his influence extends well beyond traditional shot-stopping duties.
Such qualities have been evident in recent outings, including an eye-catching display against Cádiz, where Zidane’s distribution and calm under pressure stood out. Since leaving Real Madrid, he has largely plied his trade in Spain’s second tier, but his performances suggest a goalkeeper steadily refining his all-round game.
Praise tempered with perspective
Yet Pacheta was careful to frame his endorsement. “He is not Neuer or Buffon who can guarantee us top spot, but he is a reliable goalkeeper with a strong personality.”
Pacheta also addressed the possibility of Zidane’s departure amid growing interest in his services, saying: “Moreover, we know that he has received important offers from several major clubs,” hinting at a potential summer exit from the Andalusian side.
