Morocco international Nayef Aguerd opens up about months of constant pain before surgery

Morocco international Nayef Aguerd has revealed he endured months of persistent pain before deciding to undergo surgery for a long-standing injury.

The central defender, currently playing for Olympique de Marseille after arriving from West Ham United, confirmed that the procedure became unavoidable after medical treatments failed to resolve the issue.

Aguerd had been struggling with pubalgia, a condition affecting the groin and adductor muscles that can cause prolonged discomfort and limit a player’s physical performance.

According to the defender, the pain gradually became part of his daily routine and eventually forced him to reconsider his situation.

Since October, I’ve been suffering from pain that has become a constant part of my daily life,” the centre-back explained.

“From waking up until going to bed, and sometimes even during the night, it had become relentless. Despite all the medical protocols implemented in recent months, it was unfortunately no longer enough. Surgery therefore became inevitable. This decision should have been made some time ago, but I wanted to continue and explore the best possible solutions before resorting to this.”

A difficult decision after months of treatment

The Moroccan defender had initially attempted to manage the injury through various medical treatments in the hope of avoiding an operation.

However, despite those efforts, the condition continued to cause discomfort.

With the pain becoming increasingly difficult to manage, surgery ultimately appeared to be the only viable option.

Pubalgia is a condition often associated with professional athletes, particularly footballers, as the repeated strain placed on the groin area can lead to long-term problems if not addressed properly.

For Aguerd, the decision to proceed with surgery came after months of reflection and consultation with medical staff.

Looking ahead after surgery

The defender’s statement reflects both the physical challenge he faced and the determination to continue his career despite the difficulties.

Aguerd’s experience highlights the demanding physical toll professional football can place on players, especially those competing at the highest level in European leagues.

Although the surgery marks a significant moment in his recovery process, the Moroccan international remains focused on returning to full fitness after addressing the issue that had troubled him for several months.
