Morocco defender Nayef Aguerd explains why Real Sociedad return collapsed

Morocco international Nayef Aguerd has explained why his proposed return to Real Sociedad broke down, insisting that the collapse of the transfer was not caused by a medical problem.

The defender had been close to rejoining the Spanish club from Marseille, but the move fell through after discussions over his fitness and the timetable for his return to competitive football.

Aguerd said he had seriously considered returning to San Sebastian but ultimately wanted to follow a gradual recovery programme after undergoing surgery for a pubic injury in March 2026.

Aguerd rejects medical concerns

The Morocco international addressed reports surrounding the failed transfer and said his medical examination had been successfully completed.

“There was therefore no medical problem,” the Morocco international explained.

According to Aguerd, the medical examination was validated by both clubs. The disagreement instead centred on how quickly he could return to full competition.

The defender said he wanted to continue his recovery gradually and avoid taking unnecessary risks after his recent injury.

Real Sociedad, however, were looking for a player who could be available immediately at the beginning of the season.

That difference in expectations ultimately prevented the proposed move from being completed.

Aguerd’s successful spell in Spain

Aguerd had already enjoyed a successful spell with Real Sociedad after joining the Basque club on loan from West Ham United in August 2024.

The 2024-25 season was his first experience of professional football in Spain following two years in the Premier League.

He quickly became an important member of Real Sociedad’s defence and earned the confidence of then-coach Imanol Alguacil.

His performances also helped strengthen his connection with the club and its supporters, leaving the door open for a possible permanent return.

After his loan ended, Aguerd returned to West Ham before Marseille eventually secured his permanent signing in September 2025.

Marseille beat Real Sociedad to his signature

Marseille had been interested in the Moroccan defender following his return to West Ham and eventually reached an agreement with the English club.

The French side officially signed Aguerd on a five-year contract, with the transfer reported to be worth around €23m.

The move returned the defender to Ligue 1, where he had previously played for Rennes.

Aguerd’s career has taken him from Dijon to Rennes, West Ham, Real Sociedad and Marseille, while he has also established himself as an important member of Morocco’s national team.

He played a key role during the Atlas Lions’ historic run at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Real Sociedad tried to bring him back

Real Sociedad revived their interest in Aguerd during the 2026 summer transfer window after his impressive previous campaign with the club.

Reports indicated that Marseille and Real Sociedad had reached an agreement for another loan, potentially including an option to buy.

The move appeared close to completion after Aguerd underwent the required medical examination.

However, further discussions over his fitness and return-to-play programme changed the situation.

Aguerd had been completing the final stages of his recovery from the injury that ruled him out of Morocco’s 2026 World Cup campaign.

Rather than rushing back into competitive football, he wanted to follow a controlled process that would allow him to rebuild his fitness and minimise the risk of another setback.

Morocco star pledges commitment to Marseille

Aguerd acknowledged that his future could still attract attention before the transfer window closes, particularly as Marseille continue to deal with financial considerations.

But for now, the defender has made his commitment to the French club clear.

“As long as I wear this shirt, I will give everything,” Aguerd said.

His comments indicate that Aguerd remains focused on Marseille despite the failed return to Real Sociedad.

For the Moroccan defender, the collapse of the deal was therefore not about failing a medical examination but about ensuring that his return to football is handled responsibly.

Real Sociedad’s interest underlined the impact of his first spell in Spain, but the club’s need for immediate availability and Aguerd’s cautious approach to his recovery ultimately prevented the reunion.
