Nayef Aguerd explains failed Real Sociedad transfer

Nayef Aguerd has clarified why his proposed return to Real Sociedad collapsed, insisting that the transfer did not fail because of a medical problem.

The Morocco international remains an Olympique Marseille player for now, after negotiations with his former club broke down unexpectedly.

Aguerd said his medical examination was completed successfully and approved by both teams. “My medical examination went perfectly and was validated by both clubs. There was therefore no medical problem.”

The defender explained that the disagreement concerned his return-to-play programme. Aguerd underwent pubic surgery in March and believes he still needs to rebuild his fitness carefully. Real Sociedad wanted him ready to contribute quickly, while the player preferred a gradual recovery to protect his body and regain full strength.

“It is simply a responsible decision to protect my body and produce the complete season everyone wants,” Aguerd said. He also rejected suggestions that his stance reflected a lack of respect or a personal whim.

The Moroccan has not ruled out a late change before the transfer window closes, particularly given Marseille’s financial situation. For now, however, he remains committed to the French club.

“As long as I wear this shirt, I will give everything and fight for the club, my teammates and the supporters.”
