Nathanael Mbuku begins fourth Augsburg loan spell at Saint-Trond

Nathanael Mbuku has joined Belgian club Saint-Trond on loan from FC Augsburg until the end of the season, with the agreement including an option to buy. The move gives the Jupiler Pro League side the opportunity to make the transfer permanent when the campaign concludes.

The 24-year-old forward remains under contract with FC Augsburg until 2028, but will continue his development away from the German club after securing another temporary move. Mbuku, an international player for the Congo, will now begin a new chapter with Saint-Trond, also known as STVV.

His transfer represents the fourth loan spell he has undertaken since joining FC Augsburg in 2023. The winger has repeatedly moved away from the club in search of regular playing time, with his latest switch extending that pattern into Belgian football.

Mbuku’s previous temporary spells have taken him to three different clubs. He spent time with AS Saint-Etienne in 2024 before moving to Dinamo Zagreb for the 2024-25 campaign. His most recent loan was with Montpellier HSC during the 2025-26 season.

The move to Saint-Trond therefore marks the next stage in a sequence of loans that began after his arrival at FC Augsburg. The option to buy also means the Belgian club could retain him beyond the current season, should it decide to activate the clause in the agreement.

Mbuku has already made clear that he is keen to make an impact with his new team. Speaking during his official presentation in the Saint-Trond shirt, he said: «J’espere m’imposer rapidement et apporter ma contribution au STVV».

His immediate task will be to establish himself within the Saint-Trond squad and contribute during the remainder of the season. For FC Augsburg, the arrangement allows the player to continue gaining experience while remaining tied to the club on a contract that runs until 2028.

For Saint-Trond, the deal provides access to a 24-year-old international forward for the campaign, while preserving the possibility of a permanent transfer at its conclusion. For Mbuku, it offers another opportunity to secure playing time and build on his previous loan experiences in France and Croatia.

The Belgian move follows his spells with AS Saint-Etienne, Dinamo Zagreb and Montpellier HSC, and becomes the latest step in his career since signing for FC Augsburg in 2023.
