Nathan Tella has made his long-awaited return to competitive action for Bayer Leverkusen, coming off the bench during Saturday’s thrilling 4-3 Bundesliga victory over Mainz 05.
The 27-year-old Nigerian winger entered the game in the 75th minute, replacing Afonso Moreira, to make his first Bundesliga appearance of the 2026/27 campaign after several months on the sidelines with an injury.
Tella had already taken an important step towards regaining full fitness during the international break, playing 45 minutes in a friendly against Fortuna Köln. His return to competitive action in Mainz marked another significant milestone in his recovery.
The former Southampton player had been working towards earning a place in Carles Martinez’s matchday squad after completing a productive week of training. His appearance against Mainz rewarded that progress and gave Leverkusen another attacking option for the closing stages.
Leverkusen secured all three points in a seven-goal thriller. Robert Andrich and Patrik Schick gave the visitors an early two-goal advantage before Anthony Caci scored twice to bring Mainz level. Jarell Quansah and Moussa Diaby then restored Leverkusen’s two-goal cushion, with Mainz scoring a late consolation through Benedict Hollerbach.
Tella nearly capped his comeback with a goal in stoppage time but was denied in a one-on-one opportunity by Mainz goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow
His return provides a timely boost for Leverkusen as they prepare for a demanding run of domestic and European fixtures.
