Nathan Ake admits reduced role frustration

Nathan Ake has opened up about how tough it has been to accept a smaller role at Manchester City this season, after seeing his Premier League and Champions League starts drop to just six games.

The Dutch defender, who was a regular starter in previous campaigns, has found most of his minutes coming in the domestic cups, including a full 90 in the 2–0 Carabao Cup win over Arsenal at Wembley, the 15th major trophy of his career.

Ake revealed that the situation has tested him mentally and led to honest talks with Pep Guardiola about his place in the squad.

“To be honest, it is difficult to deal with at times. Also, because I was in the starting lineup more in recent years than this season. I have also spoken to the manager (Pep Guardiola) about it. He also indicated that things are a bit different this year,” he said.

He added that the biggest challenge is staying sharp and ready. “Mentally, it demands a bit more at times. You always have to be ready when you suddenly have to play. Then people also expect you to be at your best,” Ake explained.
