Napoli’s Scott McTominay leaves Real Madrid possibility open after Mourinho question

Scott McTominay has suggested he would consider a move to Real Madrid if his former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho contacted him.

The Napoli midfielder previously worked under Mourinho at Manchester United, while the Portuguese coach is currently in charge of Real Madrid.

Asked by Corriere della Sera whether he would be interested in joining Real Madrid if Mourinho called him, McTominay replied: “If Mourinho called me to go to Real Madrid? If that happened, I would think about it.”

McTominay’s response leaves the door open to a possible reunion with Mourinho, although he did not indicate that an approach had been made or that a transfer was being discussed.

The Scotland international also addressed concerns surrounding an upcoming heart operation, insisting he was not worried about undergoing surgery.

“I’m not worried about having heart surgery, it’s a problem I have to deal with,” he said.

McTominay also rejected the suggestion that Napoli were weaker than Inter Milan, despite acknowledging the quality within the Serie A leaders’ squad.

“Inter Milan are not stronger than Napoli. We have beaten them before, so I don’t see why we cannot do it again,” he said.

When asked whether Inter’s advantage might come from having a stronger group of players, McTominay responded firmly: “No. I would never sit here and say that other teams are better than us, or that they have stronger players, because that is not the way I see football. Admitting something like that would be a sign of weakness.”

The midfielder was also asked to compare the different approaches of Antonio Conte and Massimiliano Allegri, following the change in Napoli’s coaching staff.

“From Conte to Allegri, what has changed? They are different coaches. Conte was very focused on the tactical side, and we trained a lot. I had two great years with him. He is an exceptional coach and he never stops winning,” McTominay said.

He added that it was too early to judge how Napoli would develop under their new manager, but offered a positive assessment of Allegri’s character and ideas.

“Only time will tell us how things will go with the new coach, but so far he is a good person and he has good tactical ideas. We just need time to apply them and play a little better,” he said.

Napoli’s immediate priority, according to McTominay, is their European campaign.

“For now, we want to continue our journey in the Champions League, because that is very important to us,” he said.

McTominay joined Napoli after his time at Manchester United and has previously played under Mourinho, making the possibility of a future reunion a notable talking point despite the absence of any confirmed offer.
