Napoli tensions grow as Romelu Lukaku skips training amid Anderlecht links

SSC Napoli are considering disciplinary and potential legal measures against Romelu Lukaku after the striker failed to report back to training this week, escalating a tense standoff between club and player.

The Serie A side confirmed on Tuesday that Lukaku did not respond to a directive to return from Belgium, where he has remained during the international break while recovering from injury.

The development marks a significant deterioration in relations, with the club now openly signalling its willingness to act.

“SSC Napoli can confirm that Romelu Lukaku did not respond to today’s call to return to training.

“The club reserves the right to consider taking the appropriate disciplinary action.

“As well as to determine whether the player will continue to train with the team for an indefinite period.”

Lukaku’s absence comes amid a difficult campaign in which injuries have severely limited his involvement. The Belgian forward has managed just 64 minutes of action this season, a frustrating return that has compounded what he described as a “challenging” period.

The 32-year-old had initially been named in the Belgium squad for March friendlies against the United States and Mexico but later withdrew, opting instead to remain in his home country to continue rehabilitation. His decision not to rejoin Napoli afterwards appears to have triggered the current impasse.

Reports indicate that Napoli are increasingly prepared to escalate the situation, with the possibility of legal proceedings now under consideration. The club’s firm stance reflects growing frustration over Lukaku’s prolonged absence and perceived lack of communication.

Further complicating matters, the striker is said to be intent on staying in Belgium until at least the end of the week, a move likely to deepen the rift.

For Napoli, who are navigating a crucial phase of the season, the uncertainty surrounding one of their high-profile signings is far from ideal.

Despite his limited minutes this term, Lukaku’s overall contribution stands at 15 goals in 45 appearances for the club.

However, with tensions mounting and the summer transfer window approaching, there is increasing speculation that he may have already played his final match in Napoli colours.
