Napoli urged to sympathize with Lukaku amid rift over injury management
Former Inter Milan defender Andrea Ranocchia has urged a measured response to the escalating situation between Romelu Lukaku and Napoli, describing the standoff as unusual while stressing the need for understanding.
The controversy surrounding Lukaku has intensified in recent days following his decision during the March international break.
The Belgian striker withdrew from national team duties but did not return to Italy as expected, instead opting to remain in Antwerp where he continued rehabilitation at a specialised medical facility. That choice has reportedly unsettled Napoli’s leadership, with internal discussions now centred on whether disciplinary measures are warranted.
Ranocchia, who shared a dressing room with Lukaku during their time at Inter, suggested the situation may be more complex than it appears.
Speaking to Radio Kiss Kiss, he acknowledged the odd nature of the developments but pointed to underlying factors that could explain the forward’s actions.
“A strange piece of news, truly strange. Now, I don’t know – we also need to understand the various reasons, given that he explained a bit,” highlighting the bizarre nature of the conflict,” he said.
The former defender emphasised Lukaku’s importance as a player and hinted that the psychological impact of his recent injury struggles should not be overlooked.
According to Ranocchia, extended periods on the sidelines can affect even the most established professionals, particularly those accustomed to playing a central role within their teams.
“He is certainly an important player, he has always felt important, and perhaps after an injury that kept him out for so long, he has suffered a bit on a mental level as well.”
Lukaku’s situation now places Napoli in a delicate position as they balance maintaining discipline with managing one of their key attacking assets.
