Napoli step up interest in Swiss-Congolese midfielder Johan Manzambi

Napoli are reportedly intensifying their pursuit of Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi as the club looks to reinforce Antonio Conte’s squad during the January window.

The Serie A side has shifted focus to Manzambi after Manchester United offered little encouragement over their interest in Kobbie Mainoo.

Manzambi, whose parents hail from Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo, has impressed in the Bundesliga and is now attracting attention from Italy.

The 20-year-old Switzerland international is reportedly valued at around €20 million, according to reports from TMW, with Napoli prepared to negotiate a deal after the New Year.

The midfielder’s agent, Ishmael Miller, confirmed the growing interest but stressed a measured approach.

“Of course, my phone rings constantly, but the boy wants to stay calm, finish the season at Freiburg, play for Switzerland, and then we’ll see,” Miller said. He added that “Plan A remains continuity with Freiburg in the Bundesliga, but we all know football; if a significant offer comes in, I’d be the first to consider it.”

Manzambi has emerged as a versatile option in midfield, capable of controlling play and contributing defensively, qualities that have caught the eye of Napoli’s hierarchy.

Conte is understood to be seeking a player who can provide depth and tactical flexibility, particularly as the club balances domestic and European commitments.

Napoli’s interest signals their intent to strengthen the squad ahead of the second half of the season, with the Italian side eager to maintain their title challenge and progress in the Europa League.

Manzambi’s ability to adapt to different midfield roles and his international experience with Switzerland make him a potential fit for Conte’s tactical setup.

While Freiburg would prefer to retain the player until the end of the season, the prospect of a substantial offer could see the Swiss-Angolan star depart earlier.

Napoli are monitoring the situation closely and could move quickly if negotiations align with both the club’s valuation and the player’s ambitions.
