Rémi Gomis: “If Giresse Calls, I’ll Answer” – A Teranga Lion’s Dream Still Alive
After featuring in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal, Rémi Gomis hasn’t worn the national team colors in a while due to injuries and time on the sidelines. But now that he’s back with FC Nantes, the 30-year-old midfielder hasn’t given up on his international ambitions.
Speaking on Stade this Wednesday, Gomis made it clear:
“If Alain Giresse calls me, I’ll be the first to answer present because, as a professional, I know the value of an international.”
His passion for the Lions of Teranga remains strong:
“I must not sit idly by if I am called back. I have always loved this Senegal jersey and I will continue to love it.”
Despite being drawn into a tough Group C at the 2015 AFCON—the so-called “Group of Death” with Algeria, Ghana, and South Africa—Gomis is confident in Senegal’s potential:
“There is a chance that Senegal will win this CAN. We had a good campaign by qualifying one day before the end of the qualifiers, it’s a good sign.”
With his experience and renewed fitness, Gomis could still be a valuable asset for Senegal if Giresse decides to reinforce his midfield options before the tournament in Equatorial Guinea kicks off in January 2015.
