Nampalys Mendy eyes Senegal return ahead of World Cup

Senegal midfielder Nampalys Mendy has set his sights firmly on a World Cup recall, determined to prove his worth after being left out of Pape Thiaw’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The experienced international, who was part of Senegal’s triumphant 2021 AFCON-winning squad, admitted the disappointment of missing the continental tournament in Morocco was a painful setback. However, he insists that chapter is now behind him as he focuses on earning his place back among the Lions of Teranga.

“The World Cup is always a dream. I’m doing everything I can on my end to be there. It’s a clear objective,” Mendy said. “The choice will be up to the manager, but he knows he can count on me.”

Mendy, who currently plays for Watford, expressed how deeply the AFCON omission affected him, revealing the emotional toll it took on him at the time.

“It hurt me deeply to have missed out on that (2025 Africa Cup of Nations). It killed me. That’s fate,” he added. “It cost me dearly; I’m angry with it, but I’m moving on.”

Despite the disappointment, the midfielder remains resolute and motivated, working tirelessly at club level to regain the trust of the national team coach. With the 2026 World Cup set to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Mendy sees the tournament as a major opportunity to write a new chapter in his international career.

His determination and experience could prove valuable for Senegal, who will be looking to build a strong squad capable of competing at the highest level on the global stage.

Now, the ball is firmly in the court of Pape Thiaw, as Mendy waits for a chance to prove that he still belongs among the elite midfielders representing Senegal on football’s biggest stage.
