Namibia edges closer to historic World Cup qualification

Namibia’s bid for a first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance remains on course as they prepare to face Equatorial Guinea in a crucial Group H qualifier at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Monday.

With 11 points from five matches, the Brave Warriors sit just two points behind group leaders Tunisia.

Their unbeaten run has strengthened hopes of securing a spot in the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Only the group winner secures automatic qualification, while the four best second-placed teams across the African qualifiers will compete in a play-off for a final chance at qualification.

Strong start fuels Namibia’s World Cup ambitions

Collin Benjamin’s side has impressed throughout the campaign, demonstrating a balance of attacking efficiency and defensive resilience.

A hard-fought 1-0 victory over Malawi last Thursday, courtesy of a 40th-minute strike from Prins Tjiueza, extended their unbeaten streak to five matches.

Namibia has found the net seven times while conceding just once, underlining their defensive discipline.

As the campaign reaches its critical phase, coach Benjamin has urged his players to remain grounded despite the growing excitement.

“Having dreams is legitimate, it helps you stay focused,” he said.

While acknowledging the positive trajectory of his team, he stressed the need for continued improvement and individual player development.

Equatorial Guinea’s resurgence

Equatorial Guinea, Namibia’s next opponent, has bounced back from a poor start to the qualifiers.

After suffering three consecutive defeats, they secured back-to-back victories, including a 2-0 win over São Tomé and Príncipe on Friday.

Their recent form suggests a much tougher challenge for Namibia compared to their previous encounter in November 2023, when they were awarded a 3-0 technical victory due to Equatorial Guinea fielding an ineligible player.

The road ahead

Namibia’s consistency has positioned them as serious contenders for World Cup qualification, but challenges remain.

With Tunisia maintaining their lead in the group, every point will be crucial.

A win against Equatorial Guinea would not only bolster their position but also sustain the belief that history can be made.

For Namibian football, the dream of reaching the biggest stage in international football is closer than ever.

However, as their coach emphasizes, focus and determination will be key in turning ambition into reality.
