Naby Keita’s time at Werder Bremen appears to be nearing its end, with the midfielder reportedly set for a move to Hungarian champions Ferencvaros. According to German daily Bild, the 29-year-old could join the Budapest-based club on a 12-month loan, offering him a fresh start after a difficult spell in the Bundesliga.
Keita, who made the move to Werder Bremen in June 2023, has struggled to make an impact at the club, plagued by a series of injuries.
The Guinean international, who previously enjoyed successful years at Liverpool, has only featured in five matches for Bremen due to issues such as adductor and hamstring problems.
His time in Germany reached a breaking point in April when he was suspended after an incident before a match, and although a move to Hatayspor in the summer seemed likely, it ultimately fell through at the last minute.
However, there is now a glimmer of hope for the midfielder. Bild reports that Keita is on the verge of joining Ferencvaros, with Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg also hinting at the imminent deal.
Talks between Werder Bremen and the Hungarian club are reportedly progressing well, although the move will only be finalised once Keita passes his medical examination.
The loan, set to begin in January 2025, could be extended until 2026 if both parties agree, giving the former Liverpool player the opportunity to revive his career in European football.
“I only want one thing: to play,” Keita said during a recent interview with Kicker, addressing his ongoing struggles to secure regular first-team football at Werder Bremen.
“A lot of people say to me, ‘Naby, you’re injured, why don’t you want to play for Bremen?’ I tell them: ‘No, I feel good’. Since I came back from the Africa Cup of Nations, I’ve only wanted one thing: to play for the fans and the club. But that doesn’t depend on me.”
In his current situation at Werder Bremen, Keita has found himself playing with the reserve team in the regional league or training alone after his reintegration into the first team was ruled out in August.
Despite these challenges, he remains hopeful that a move to Ferencvaros will offer him the chance to regain his form and potentially enjoy European competition once again.
Ferencvaros, currently 11th in the Europa League, is eager to welcome Keita in the coming months, hoping the midfielder’s arrival will bolster their squad for the second half of the season.
If the loan deal is confirmed in the next few days, Keita could soon be back on the European stage, looking to regain his fitness and rediscover his best form.
