Nabil Bentaleb signs new Lille contract through to 2028

Lille have extended the contract of Algeria international Nabil Bentaleb until the summer of 2028, ending recent speculation that the midfielder could move to an English club.

Bentaleb’s previous agreement with the French club was due to expire at the end of the 2025-26 season. Lille have now formally confirmed that the 31-year-old will remain with the side for a further two years.

The midfielder’s future had attracted attention in recent months, with Bentaleb linked with a move to one of the clubs in the English league. Those reports have now been put to rest by his decision to continue his career at Lille.

Bentaleb has remained with the club after making a remarkable return from a cardiac arrest that threatened to halt his playing career. He suffered the cardiac arrest in June 2024 and subsequently underwent surgery to have a device fitted to regulate his heartbeat.

The Algeria international was absent for eight months before receiving permission to resume competitive football. His return was approved by the medical committee of the French Football Federation, allowing him to play again in February 2025.

Bentaleb then produced an immediate and memorable contribution for Lille. Just four minutes after returning to action, he scored and helped his side secure a 2-0 victory in a moment that will remain permanently etched in his memory.

His comeback allowed him to continue a Lille career that has so far brought him 81 appearances. During those matches, Bentaleb has scored three goals and provided five assists.

The contract renewal means Lille will retain a player who has overcome a serious health setback to return to first-team football and remain an important part of the squad. It also ensures that Bentaleb’s next chapter will continue in France rather than in England, where he had been linked with a potential transfer.
