Nabil Bentaleb returns to Lille training after surgery setback
Algerian midfielder Nabil Bentaleb has returned to training with Lille OSC after several weeks on the sidelines following surgery to treat an infection, providing a major boost for both club and country ahead of a crucial period.
The 31-year-old had been one of Lille’s standout performers in recent months, playing a key role in the club’s strong rise up the Ligue 1 table before his momentum was interrupted by a medical setback in April.
Bentaleb underwent surgery on April 17 and had not featured since then, raising concerns among supporters over his condition and the timing of his return.
Lille manager Bruno Génésio recently indicated that the midfielder was expected back earlier in the week, but his full return to the squad was only confirmed on Thursday at the Domaine de Luchin training centre.
His comeback arrives at an important stage of the season for Lille, who remain involved in the race for European qualification.
The Algerian international’s influence in midfield has been particularly noticeable during the club’s strongest run of results.
With Bentaleb in the starting line-up, Lille won four of five matches and drew the other. During his absence, however, the club dropped four points from their last three league outings, damaging their hopes of securing a UEFA Champions League place.
The midfielder’s absence initially appeared likely to be brief, but the extended recovery period created uncertainty around both his physical condition and long-term fitness. Supporters had repeatedly sought updates on social media as speculation grew over the nature of the issue.
Some reports suggested concerns linked to the defibrillator implanted after Bentaleb suffered cardiac arrest in June 2024, although no official confirmation was given regarding those claims.
Coach Bruno Génésio eventually reassured fans after Lille’s draw against Le Havre, stating that “Bentaleb will be back starting Monday.” That prediction was finally realised with the player’s return to group training this week.
Beyond Lille’s domestic ambitions, Bentaleb’s recovery is also being closely monitored in Algeria.
National team coach Vladimir Petkovic is expected to finalise his plans for upcoming international competitions, and the midfielder’s chances of returning to the squad may depend on how quickly he regains rhythm and match fitness.
For now, Lille will hope his return can reignite their push for a strong finish to the season.
