Nabil Bentaleb disappointed with exclusion from Algeria squad for AFCON 2025
Nabil Bentaleb has opened up about his disappointment after being left out of Algeria’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, admitting the decision was a difficult one to accept.
The LOSC Lille midfielder did not hide his frustration but struck a respectful tone when reacting to the omission, making it clear that he holds no resentment towards the coaching staff or the players selected.
“I was very disappointed. I thought I was on the right track and had made the necessary efforts to be part of this group,” he said.
Despite feeling let down, the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder stressed that he has chosen not to turn the situation into a controversy, instead backing head coach Vladimir Petkovic and the chosen squad.
“The coach made his choices and I respect them. I wish them the best for the competition. For my part, I will experience this AFCON as a supporter,” he concluded, underlining his decision to move on with dignity.
Bentaleb had only recently returned to international football following a long absence caused by heart surgery and had re-established himself with the Fennecs between June and October.
However, the strong return to form of Ismaël Bennacer, coupled with the reintegration of Ramiz Zerrouki, gradually pushed him out of Petkovic’s plans ahead of the tournament.
The 2025 AFCON is scheduled to commence in Morocco on Sunday, December 21.
