Charlton Athletic say a man was found dead inside The Valley, prompting police to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police attended Charlton’s stadium on Tuesday morning after an incident during the early hours of Monday. A man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a statement issued by the League One club.

The circumstances of the death remain under investigation. Charlton Athletic have appealed to anyone who may have information or witnessed what happened to contact the police.

“We extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to the family, friends and loved ones of the deceased at this difficult time,” the club said.

Charlton added that it was continuing to co-operate with the authorities as inquiries progressed and asked people to respect the privacy of everyone affected by the incident.

The club also stressed that there was no indication Charlton Athletic had been involved in any offence. It thanked its staff for their professional handling of what it described as a difficult situation.

A statement published by the club was accompanied by the message “Club statement” and the hashtag #cafc.

The Independent reported that the incident came only a few days after Charlton played their first home match of the EFL League One season. They recovered from falling behind to beat Derby County 2-1 at The Valley.

Charlton were due to travel to West Ham for their first away fixture of the season before facing Tottenham in the second round of the EFL Cup.

Police inquiries remain ongoing, and no further details have been released about the identity of the deceased or the cause of death.
