Mustapha Hadji explains why Zinedine Zidane does not trust Al Hilal’s Theo Hernandez

Morocco great Mustapha Hadji believes Theo Hernandez’s defensive shortcomings are the reason Zinedine Zidane has not placed his trust in the Al Hilal full-back at international level.

Hernandez is widely recognised for his attacking ability from left-back, but Hadji says those qualities alone are not enough to secure a place in Zidane’s plans for France.

Speaking to Al Arabiya, Hadji said Zidane has several options in the position and acknowledged that Hernandez remains a talented player. He also pointed out that the defender had previously been an important part of former France manager Didier Deschamps’ plans.

However, Hadji believes the player’s decline in defensive performance could explain why he has not established himself as a preferred choice under Zidane.

“Zidane has several options at left-back,” Hadji said. “Theo Hernandez is a distinguished player, and he was one of the key players in Didier Deschamps’ calculations.”

The former Morocco international added that Zidane wants his full-backs to combine attacking contribution with strength and discipline when defending. In his view, Hernandez currently offers more in the final third than he does in his defensive duties.

Hadji said that balance is particularly important to Zidane when selecting players for the position. While Hernandez can help create danger and make a significant attacking contribution, he still needs to improve defensively to become a suitable option for the French coach.

The comments come as Hernandez continues his career with Al Hilal in the Roshn Saudi League. The club is listed to face Al Ettifaq on 07 November 2026.

France are also listed to play Italy in the first path of the UEFA Nations League on 12 November 2026.

Hadji concluded that Hernandez’s attacking qualities do not, by themselves, guarantee him a place in Zidane’s plans. He believes the priority given to defensive organisation and overall balance ultimately explains why the Al Hilal player has not received the French manager’s full confidence.
