MTN8 final: Rodney Ramagalela highlights Sundowns pressure and Yanela Mbuthuma threat
Former Mamelodi Sundowns striker Rodney Ramagalela says Saturday’s MTN8 final against Orlando Pirates gives Miguel Cardoso the ideal chance to win his first domestic title in South Africa.
Defending champions Orlando Pirates have won the competition’s final in each of their past four appearances, placing additional pressure on Mamelodi Sundowns to end that run when the sides meet at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
Ramagalela, who also played for Polokwane City and Black Leopards, believes Sundowns will be motivated by the opportunity to avenge their defeat by Pirates in the 2023 final at the same venue.
The retired forward also discussed Sundowns’ injury concerns ahead of the match, with Teboho Mokoena, Bathusi Aubaas and Aubrey Modiba among the players whose fitness has been questioned.
The final represents another meeting between two of South Africa’s most successful clubs, both of whom have enjoyed sustained periods of achievement in recent seasons. Ramagalela expects the occasion to add another significant chapter to the developing rivalry between the two sides.
He said both clubs would be eager to secure a historic victory, with Sundowns seeking to stop Pirates from extending their remarkable record in the competition.
Ramagalela also praised Orlando Pirates striker Yanela Mbuthuma, describing the youngster as a significant attacking threat despite the criticism he has received.
Known as “The Last Legend Standing”, Ramagalela shared his assessment of the final, the pressure facing Sundowns and the potential impact of the injury concerns during a conversation with KZN media.
