MTN8 final: Orlando Pirates face Mamelodi Sundowns in ‘champions versus champions’ clash

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou says the MTN8 final will bring together two of South Africa’s strongest teams when his side meet Mamelodi Sundowns at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

Pirates are seeking a fifth successive MTN8 title, while Sundowns arrive as the reigning champions of Africa. Pirates also won the league title last season, prompting Ouaddou to describe the match as a contest between champions.

The final has been preceded by a challenging build-up, with a FIFA break lasting nearly three weeks. Both clubs supplied a large number of players to South Africa’s national team, and Pirates’ international contingent is due to return from Egypt on Saturday afternoon.

Ouaddou said his squad had made good progress despite the disruption caused by international commitments.

“Preparation is going well. It is a good event and we are excited to play this kind of game and defend this title,” he said.

“We had about two weeks to prepare for the match. We missed some players because of international duty, like many teams, but the rhythm and focus are on the game.”

The Pirates manager also highlighted the significance of hosting the final in Durban, where he said the club had strong support.

“It is a fantastic event in Durban. We have a lot of support in this city. Two champions are involved, so it is a fantastic event for the country and football lovers,” he said.

“Our aim is to have great ambition, do well, show the best face of Pirates and present a good image of South African football.”

Ouaddou added that the match would attract attention beyond South Africa, increasing the responsibility on both teams to perform well.

“The game is watched across the continent, and even around the world, so it is important to show a good image,” he said.

“I am excited. There is good energy from the players and the technical staff. We are now just waiting for the international players to arrive so we can continue our preparation.”

Pirates vice-captain Tapelo Xoki, who is standing in for Nkosinathi Sibisi, said the final offered an opportunity to create a lasting moment for the club.

“It is a chance to make history for ourselves and the club. We will do our best to make our supporters proud,” Xoki said.

The MTN8 final kicks off at 18h00 on Saturday afternoon.
