Mpho Makola leads Via Sport JBM FC into new ABC Motsepe League era

Former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana midfielder Mpho Makola is helping guide Via Sport JBM FC into a new chapter after the Johannesburg club secured a place in the ABC Motsepe League.

The club, previously known as Via Sport FC, has completed a rebrand following its acquisition of JBM FC’s position in the third tier of South African football. It is aiming to make a significant contribution to the development of young players in the country.

Makola has been involved with Via Sport since the 2024/25 season and has steadily established himself in coaching. During that time, he has played an important part in the development of several young footballers who have subsequently moved to clubs in the PSL.

The rise of the club has been particularly notable in the Kathorus area, where its progress has offered encouragement to players hoping to build professional careers.

Makola and Mabona lead club’s rise

Via Sport JBM FC is based in Johannesburg’s Rand Central area and was founded by chairman and owner Tshepo Mabona, a former footballer and five-time World Cup finals broadcaster.

Mabona runs the club alongside his partner, Makola, who is the head coach and previously represented Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana.

The club’s rapid progress began in the 2024/25 campaign, when Via Sport won the SAFA Johannesburg Hollywoodbets Regional League, the fourth tier of South African football.

That success earned the team a place in the Inter-Regional Playoffs. Its move into the ABC Motsepe League was then secured through the purchase of JMB FC’s status, after which the club adopted the name Via Sport JBM FC.

The organisation now has teams competing in both the SAB League and the ABC Motsepe League as it continues to build its structure.

Nine players move to PSL clubs

Via Sport JBM FC’s home ground is Huntersfield in Katlehong, but the club currently stages its matches at the Nike Center because of the condition of the stadium.

Despite the change of venue, the club remains a significant presence in Kathorus. It is the highest-division club in the region and has become a source of hope for local footballers seeking a route into the professional game.

The club says its influence can already be measured by the number of players who have progressed beyond its ranks. Nine footballers have been transferred to professional PSL clubs during its short existence.

With ambitions of eventually reaching the top flight, Via Sport JBM FC is continuing its upward development under Mabona’s ownership and Makola’s leadership.
