Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho’s decision to keep Endrick rather than sanction a summer loan move to Roma was rewarded as the Brazilian forward inspired a dramatic 4-3 Champions League victory at the Stadio Olimpico.
The 20-year-old was introduced early in the second half, replacing Arda Guler, and made an immediate impact. Endrick’s powerful header brought Real Madrid level at 3-3 and gave the visitors renewed momentum in a thrilling contest.
The performance has strengthened belief within the club that Endrick is beginning to move beyond a frustrating period disrupted by injuries and limited opportunities. Madrid now feel he has taken an important step towards fulfilling the potential that made him such an exciting prospect.
Endrick completed two successful dribbles, used his acceleration to unsettle Roma’s defence and repeatedly threatened in the final third. His contribution underlined his ability to influence a match soon after coming on.
It also appeared to vindicate Mourinho’s decision to reject Roma’s request to borrow the player during the summer.
“When Roma asked for his loan in the summer, I said it was impossible. I know this boy’s abilities,” Mourinho said after the match.
The Portuguese manager believes Endrick has the quality to make a significant contribution at the highest level. The more immediate issue will be ensuring the youngster receives enough regular playing time to build on his display in Rome.
Endrick said he remained confident in Mourinho’s judgement and was ready to contribute whenever selected.
“I was talking to God. If I have to play, Mou will put me on, and if not, he won’t. He will do what is best for me. I will be there to help however I can,” he said.
That approach may be central to Endrick’s attempts to establish himself at Real Madrid. His appearance in Italy also offered an indication of how Mourinho could use him.
Rather than deploying him as a centre-forward, Mourinho sent him on as a right-winger – a position Endrick has rarely occupied. The manager reportedly sees the flank as a role in which the Brazilian could be effective.
That versatility could allow Real Madrid to play Endrick alongside fellow youngster Espi, limiting the need for the pair to compete directly for the same position.
Endrick must now turn one outstanding performance into a run of consistent contributions. If he can reproduce the level he showed against Roma, he may become a more influential part of Real Madrid’s plans.
His next chance to impress could come on Sunday, when Real Madrid host Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabeu.
