Mourinho set for Roma return as Real Madrid visit in Champions League

AS Roma host Real Madrid at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, with kick-off at 19:00 GMT, as Jose Mourinho prepares to face his former club in the second matchday of the UEFA Champions League league phase.

Mourinho is now in charge of the Spanish side but previously managed Roma from 2021 to 2024. His return to the Italian capital will add significance to a fixture in which the home supporters will hope their team can challenge one of European football’s leading clubs.

Roma began their European campaign with a 1-1 draw away to Fenerbahce. Real Madrid, meanwhile, made a winning start by beating Inter Milan 2-1.

The result leaves Real Madrid looking to maintain their momentum, while Roma will be aiming to claim their first victory of the campaign.

Real Madrid hold the advantage in previous meetings

The clubs have met 12 times in the UEFA Champions League. Real Madrid have won eight of those matches, compared with three victories for Roma, while the other encounter ended in a draw.

Real Madrid have scored 24 goals across those meetings, with Roma finding the net nine times.

Mourinho’s return will be one of the main talking points at the Stadio Olimpico, but Roma must also contend with a Real Madrid side seeking to build on its opening European win.
